Great news for Certified/Licensed healthcare workers: jobs are abundant and wages have gone up. There is an extreme shortage of healthcare workers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The increasing prices in rent and housing push the low-wage earners to relocate elsewhere. This resulted to shortage which pushed salary and wage adjustments to go up. The lucky ones are those who had settled in the Bay for a long time already.
If you are currently a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) or Certified Home Health Aide (HHA), it is a must that you complete the 48-hour Continuing Education (CE) requirements to keep your certification valid and continue employment – 30 hours for Certified Hemodialysis Technicians (CHT) and Registered Nurses (RN).  Be reminded that your CPR Certification must also be current in order to keep your employment in a health care facility.
Careway Health Institute is an approved In-Service Training and Continuing Education provider by both California Department of Public Health (CDPH NAC# 6886) and the California Board of Registered Nurses (BRN Provider No. CEP 16320).

How to Renew your CNA and HHA Certification?
CNA certificates must be renewed every two (2) years. You may renew your certificate any time within two (2) years after the expiration date, if by the time the certificate expires you will have completed the following:
  1. You have previously received and maintained criminal record clearance for CNA and HHA where the clearance has been granted; and,
  2. You have provided nursing or nursing-related services in a health facility to residents for compensation within your most recent certification period; and,
  3. You have successfully obtained and submitted documentation of 48 hours of In-Service Training (provided by the Skilled Nursing Facility-SNF employer or Home Health Agency – HHA employer) or Continuing Education Units (CEUs) (provided by a non-SNF/HHA employer) within your most recent certification period. The SNF In-Service documentation must be submitted on the CDPH 283A form, including the signature of the instructor responsible for the training. Only CDPH-approved CEU provider with a Nurse Assistant Certification Number (NAC#) may provide CEUs for CNAs. CEU certificate must be submitted with the renewal application. BRN Provider CEUs are not accepted. Twelve (12) of 48 hours shall be completed in each year of the two-year certification period.
A maximum of 24 of the 48 hours may be obtained only through a CDPH-approved online computer training program listed on CDPH website. Please visit CDPH website for a complete listing of CDPH-approved online CEU computer training programs and CDPH-approved classroom CEU providers.

HHA certificates must be renewed every two years. You may renew your certificate anytime within four years after the expiration date of your certificate, if by the time your certificate expires you will have completed the following:

  1. You have successfully obtained and submitted documentation of 24 hours of In-Service Training/CEUs within your most recent certification period. The documentation must include a signature of the instructor who was responsible for the training. A minimum of 12 of the 24 hours shall be completed in each year of the 2-year certification period (HHA may not complete online CEUs).
  2. If you do not meet the renewal requirement, you must re-train through a CDPH-approved HHA training program to receive an active HHA certificate.
  3. If you have an active CNA certificate, you may renew at the same time as your HHA. Renewing the CNA and HHA certificate together require the completion and submission of 48 hours of In-Service Training/CEUs.
CNAs/HHAs may obtain CEUs offered by Careway Health Institute as a CDPH-approved In-Service Training/Classroom CEU provider (NAC#6886).
How to Renew your CHT Certification?
Certified Hemodialysis Technicians (CHTs):
  1. Must submit a completed Renewal Application (CDPH 283 G); and
  2. Must obtain thirty (30) hours of In-Service Training/Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in dialysis care or general health care and submit proof of the completed hours with the CDPH 283 G. Applicants must submit copies of their certificates of completion with the CDPH 283 G to verify the In-Service Training/CEU requirement has been met. No other documentation will be accepted for the In-Service Training/CEU verification purpose. The submission of the completed thirty (30) hours of In-Service Training/CEUs is required, per Business and Professions Code, Division 2, Chapter 3, Article 3.5, Section 1247.63(b).
